ABOUT US

The Principal of MetOcean Research Ltd is Dr Kevin Ewans. Kevin has over 35 years’ experience as a metocean engineer in the offshore industry. Many of these years were spent in Shell specifying metocean criteria for the design and operation of offshore structures around the globe. This involved studying and quantifying relevant metocean phenomena for engineering and operational activities at locations in many of the world’s oceans and seas. His work also involved research into a number of important metocean topics, including fundamental aspects of ocean waves, the application of ocean-wave-induced microseisms for geophysical exploration, the application of extremal analysis for developing metocean design criteria, extraordinary metocean requirements for the design and operation of various infrastructure, such as floating platforms and seabed pipelines, and site specific climatological investigations. Kevin formed MetOcean Research Ltd in 2017, to provide metocean services to the offshore industry. He has a PhD in Physics from the University of Auckland.

OUR SERVICES

Provide accurate and effective solutions for ocean and coastal engineering applications and operational requirements. Our suite of services is based on extensive experience and deep understanding of metocean phenomena and the challenges they present to establishing facilities and operating in the ocean and coastal zones.

METOCEAN CONSULTANCY

Consultancy is offered on all aspects of metocean related matters in support of engineering and operational requirements of offshore and coastal projects.

  • Identification of key metocean information requirements
  • Recommendations on how to obtain the information
  • Study definitions
  • Preparation of specifications
  • Technical Reviews
  • Data collation, assessment, and interpretation
  • Recommendations on metocean field measurement programmes

DATA ANALYSIS & INTERPRETATION

Data analysis and interpretation services are offered. The services refer primarily to Metocean data.

  • Investigation of sources of data
  • Retrieval of data from data sources
  • Reformatting of data
  • Sample representativeness assessments
  • Data validation and quality control
  • Evaluation of data accuracy and reliability
  • Identification of metocean phenomena

DESIGN & OPERATIONAL CRITERIA

Metocean design and Operational criteria are provided.

  • Identification of metocean phenomena and parameters needed for design.
  • Identification of metocean phenomena likely to impact operations.
  • Specification of metocean criteria for design.
  • Specification of metocean statistics for planning and execution of operations

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

We are currently active in a number of research areas, including: the parameterisation of wave spectra for ocean and naval architectural engineering applications; the application of higher-order spectral analysis for identifying nonlinear wave-wave interactions; the likely effect of climate change on the intensity and occurrence of extreme wave events in the future; and the assessment of the performance, particularly the accuracy and reliability, of contemporary ocean wave measuring instruments used by the offshore industry.
